Hi, I’m Dr. Lao!

I’m a US board-certified psychiatrist. I currently work at UCLA Health.

I help people reach their full potential through thoughtful, evidence-based, personalized care.

Education & Training

  • Consultation-Liaison Fellowship: UCLA Health

  • Psychiatry Residency: Duke University Hospital

  • MBA: University of North Carolina Washington

  • Medical School: New York Medical College

  • Undergraduate: UC Berkeley

I graduated valedictorian from high school. I then studied integrative biology at UC Berkeley graduating Magne Cum Laude. I then attended medical school at New York Medical College, where I was honored as the top medical student in psychiatry. From there, I completed my general psychiatry residency at Duke University Hospital. While at Duke, I also completed the psycho-therapy track specializing in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).

I then further sub-specialized in consultation-liaison psychiatry at UCLA Health, in conjunction with the Cedars-Sinai Health System. This means I have additional expertise practicing psychiatry safely and effectively in medically complicated situations. During this time, I also completed an MBA with an emphasis on systems of care and patient access.

Clinical Approach

Medications & Therapy

I use a combination of medication management with psychotherapy.

I have training in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive and Behavioral Therapy (CBT), supportive psychotherapy, psychodynamic psychotherapy, and couples/family therapy.

I take a blended approach to best meet your needs.

Science & Evidence-Based

My treatment plans are always driven by science and the current academic literature.

I combine this with a layer of experience and practicality.

Thoughtful, Individualized Care

I take into account all aspects of your life in a thoughtful, holistic approach. I tailor my approaches to your individual situation, needs, and goals.
